  Doug joined Specialty in 2004 to further equip and develop the Civil Construction Division, which was established earlier in 2000. At that time, Doug brought both local and regional knowledge of the civil construction business, along with a proven track record in leading teams and trade partners in a wide variety of civil construction disciplines, including but not limited to piped utilities, concrete, facility construction, mechanical work, and earthwork operations. After coming on board, Doug quickly demonstrated his unmatched work ethic by leading a competitive bidding process to secure work that supported growth. At the same time, Doug acquired, developed, and positively influenced a great team of builders, advancing the Civil Construction Division year after year. During his twenty-year leadership, he led teams in many projects such as major pipelines (over 5 miles) at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California Men’s Colony Water Distribution Systems Upgrade, Marina Coast Water District Pump Station and Reservoir, and many more. Doug was also instrumental in assisting with the identification and procurement of our capital equipment fleet to support the diverse needs of the division. Despite being older than many, Doug’s energy, enthusiasm, and efforts were often unmatched. His approach and effort were never fraught with discouragement or complaint. He was, and remains, a positive, upbeat, and happy professional in all his pursuits. Doug’s spirit has been passed down to the new teams, and that legacy will live on.

  Since officially retiring his post in May 2024 as Vice President of the General Construction Division, Doug continues to serve the company and managers part-time.

  In his enduring ways, Doug will continue to pursue his life joys and passions with his wife Shannon, sons Carson, Connor, and Caden, and their families at the ranch in Santa Ynez. Doug is a cowboy at heart, and it really shows when you see him at the ranch.

• Steven Haymaker

  Steve joined Specialty in 1998 to establish and advance the General Construction Division. At that time, Steve brought local knowledge, design expertise, many strong relationships, and a keen sense of quality construction. Since then, Steve has led our general construction teams and trade partners in the construction of many amazing projects here on the Central Coast, including Niner Wine Estates, Law Family Winery and Residence, Brave and Maiden Winery, and more. During his tenure, he also expanded Specialty’s work into delivering steel building systems. Many of the projects, including those mentioned above, incorporated these steel systems. This ability and approach created significant value for our clients by both lowering costs and improving time to delivery. Steve most recently established a teaming relationship with Butler Buildings, a national leader in steel buildings. Specialty will now handle all steel building systems through that partnership along the Central Coast. Steve is often described as a true master builder with the ability to visualize the construction process from plans to implementation. Steve’s skill and passion have positively impacted many team members, design professionals, and clients along the way. We know his expertise, contributions, and deft touch were instrumental in developing and equipping the next group of managers and team members at Specialty to continue the quality legacy in the future.

  Since officially retiring his post in May 2024 as Vice President of the General Construction Division, Steve continues to serve the company and managers part-time.

  Steve will now get to enjoy more of his passions in life with his wife Holly and son Lance. He is passionate about adventure, the outdoors, snow and water skiing, and especially riding his mountain bike.

• Chris Teaford

  Chris joined Specialty in 2010 during the transition of our former CFO. Despite not having any formal construction background, Chris quickly adapted to the differences and financial leadership practices, successfully improving our processes. Prior to his hire at Specialty, Chris had a relationship with Specialty through his experience as a client and owner’s representative for a significant property improvement and expansion in 2008, in addition to his CFO duties with a local engineering company. His experience as a Specialty client gave him a real understanding of what we do, and he saw the front lines of our business. Chris liked what he experienced with Specialty, and that relationship was forged in the rigors of the construction process. When the opportunity came, Chris joined our team, bringing his big-city wisdom and witty intellect.

  Chris’s experience, style, and approach complemented our management team immensely and ultimately influenced the team to continually improve, adapt, and stay current. During his tenure, Chris not only handled the financial stewardship of Specialty but also created a best-in-class technology infrastructure, making us better than the regional competition. Despite not being comfortable with the title given by his colleagues, Chris has often been described as the smartest guy in the room. He was glad to influence and serve our team, and his intellect rubbed off on the team.

  Chris officially retired as CFO on May 28, 2024. While he will be missed by many, he left a solid team in place and did an extraordinary job of preparing and equipping his fantastic successor. With gratitude, excitement, and a little envy, we wish him well as he heads into his new life journey.

  Chris is excited to experience life outside of the workplace. We know that will involve more time with his wife Stephanie and his boys James, Nick, and Matthew. No doubt some of those experiences will include cycling, walks and hikes, fast cars, Italian food, excellent cafés, and spending time with friends.
